Study supported by the Forest Development Fund (agreement No. 22-00-S0MF01-000002
On 11 December 2019, the European Commission (EC) presented a communication entitled 'European Green deal'. Building on the European Green Deal, on 20 May 2020, the EC issued a communication on the 'EU biodiversity strategy for 2030'. A number of the clarifying guidelines and draft regulations of the above-mentioned documents are already in the public domain, but some of them are still under discussion in various working groups. The aim of the study is to provide scientific support to the Ministry of Agriculture for discussions with the European Commission or other stakeholders for the assessment of the impact of alternatives to the implementation of the European Union Biodiversity Strategy 2030 on the forest sector.
The aim of the study is to provide scientific support to the Ministry of Agriculture for discussions with the European Commission or other stakeholders for the assessment of the impact of alternatives to the implementation of the European Union Biodiversity Strategy 2030 on the forest sector.
Tasks of the study:
- Assess the impact on the forest sector of the objectives included in the EU Biodiversity Strategy on the basis of statistical forest inventory data.
- To evaluate the proposals developed by the European Commission for the integration of biodiversity protection objectives into forestry practices (guidelines for forestry closer to nature), including the afforestation and restoration of biodiverse forests, as well as the removal of long-standing untouched and "natural" forests.
- Provide data-driven support to ensure that investments in forest management and forest sector development guide the implementation of the provisions of the European Union Biodiversity Strategy 2030.
- In consultation with representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, to prepare explanations and justifications for the preparation and justification of the position of Latvia in the working groups of the European Commission on the conditions for achieving the objectives of the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030 in forest ecosystems.
