The aim of the study is to evaluate greenhouse gas (GHG) emission mitigation potential of agroforestry systems with organic and mineral soils in agricultural land and to elaborate planning recommendations for cost-effective and climate-friendly management of agroforestry systems.

This research project will contribute to implementation on National and European Union GHG mitigation and adaptation targets by improvement of ability to evaluate climate change mitigation potential of the agroforestry systems. The direct aim of the study is to elaborate parametric models for accounting of GHG emissions and CO2 removals in selected agroforestry systems established in areas with mineral and organic soils and to develop tools for monitoring of impact of implemented agroforestry projects. The study results will be integrated with the national GHG inventory and projections system for land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) sector.

The main project actions are:

  1. Literature review on climate change mitigation potential of selected agroforestry systems;
  2. Development of parametric equations for calculations of GHG emissions from soil and CO2 removals (carbon stock change);
  3. Climate-friendly solutions for mechanized planting, thinning and harvesting of agroforestry systems (socio-economic and climate impact assessment);
  4. Development of decision support tools;
  5. Scientific dissemination of the project results.
