The central event of Vidzeme Innovation Week took place on February 26 — the conference "Next Level", bringing together representatives from innovation, entrepreneurship, and research sectors. In the technology and innovation demo zone, the Latvian State Forest Research Institute "Silava" also participated with the activity "Soil health and sustainable environmental management", where research assistants Kārlis Dūmiņš and Austra Zuševiča gave visitors insight into how soil properties influence forest tree growth, carbon sequestration, and ecosystem resilience under changing climate conditions.

As a part of Vidzeme Innovation Week, on February 24 LSFRI "Silava" also organized a hands-on event in Mežole "Forest Soil Health Measurement and Improvement – Soil Mission." Participants had the opportunity to learn how forest restoration takes place after different types of disturbances — including mineral extraction, wind damage, and insect outbreaks. Practical demonstrations showcased science-based approaches to forest restoration and resilience strengthening under real conditions.
The scientists of LSFRI "Silava" researchers shared their findings and experience:
- Viktorija Vendina – Assessing the value of healthy soils in Latvia and across Europe;
- Austra Zuševica – Soil organisms and their role in ecosystem functioning;
- Dagnija Lazdiņa – Improving tree growth conditions and optimal timing and methods;
- Uvis Dambergs – on the role of sanitary logging, its frequency, and tree growth in restored quarry sites.
Vidzemes Innovation Week events demonstrate that science and innovation in forestry provide concrete, practically applicable solutions for a sustainable future.
