Arnis Gailis, the Head of the Forest tree breeding of the Latvian State Forest Research Institute "Silava", successfully defended his doctoral dissertation Breeding of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.) in Latvia on January 29.
In the coming decades, the effective use of forest land and the targeted regeneration of stands with selected reproductive material will become increasingly important. Gailis’ dissertation provides a comprehensive evaluation of birch selection results in Latvia, assessing for the first time in practice its impact on tree phenotypic traits and forestry economic indicators, while supporting the wider use of high-quality selected planting material in forest management.
