On January 8 the Latvian State Forest Research Institute "Silava" hosted the seminar "PeatTransform: Towards Climate Neutrality in the Peat Sector", bringing together nearly 100 participants. The seminar was attended by representatives of public administration institutions, companies from the peat and related industries, non-governmental organizations, as well as scientific institutions.
During the seminar, participants were introduced to the main directions of the PeatTransform research programme, which focus on the development of the peat sector in the context of climate neutrality:
- Improving the measurement and calculation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the national GHG inventory for the peat sector;
- Innovative solutions for the recultivation of peat extraction sites;
- Development of new products and technologies with a low carbon footprint and high added value;
- Social-economic assessment of the peat sector;
- Development of policy recommendations towards sustainable use of natural resources.
The seminar served as an important platform for knowledge exchange and discussions among scientists, policymakers, and industry representatives on opportunities for the sustainable development of the peat sector in Latvia.
