From June 23 to 26, 2025, Gundega Done, research assistant of LSFRI "Silava", participated in the 9th International Moose Symposium, held in the city of Östersund (Sweden).

At the Symposium,  Gundega Done presented a poster on the status of the moose population in Latvia, showcasing the Institute's research findings and experience in population monitoring and management.

The symposium brought together 200 participants from 11 countries. This conference is one of the most significant global platforms for discussing issues related to the ecology, management, and research of moose (Alces alces).

A wide range of topics were covered during the event:

  • Physiology, diseases, and genetic diversity,
  • Feeding habits, habitat selection, and the impact of climate change,
  • Interactions with large predators, road traffic, and other ungulate species,
  • Interactions with forestry,
  • Population management and long-term monitoring.

A key takeaway from the discussions was that similar challenges are present across much of the moose's range – namely, how to balance the interests of hunters and foresters while maintaining a viable moose population and reducing damage to forest regeneration, especially pine stands.
