Researcher of LSFRI "Silava" researcher Aldis Butlers, within the framework of the project Peatland restoration for greenhouse gas emission reduction and carbon sequestration in the Baltic Sea region (LIFE PeatCarbon), participated in the international European Carbon Farming Summit 2026, held from 17 to 19 March in Padua (Italy).

At the summit, Aldis Butlers presented a poster Greenhouse gas emissions from near-natural, rewetted and degraded mires and also shared research results during the Innovation Session, where participants presented short talks on their experience in greenhouse gas (GHG) emission measurement, verification, and certification.

The Summit is one of the most important European-level events dedicated to carbon farming and sustainable land management. It brought together scientists, policymakers, farmers, representatives of non-governmental organizations, and the private sector to discuss climate change mitigation solutions and opportunities for sustainable development in Europe.

Discussions emphasized the need to move from pilot projects to the wider implementation of carbon farming solutions, while ensuring both environmental benefits and economic viability for land managers.

The LIFE PeatCarbon project was presented alongside other LIFE programme initiatives, contributing to discussions on peatland restoration, greenhouse gas emission reduction, and sustainable land use.
