The annual environmental education event Latvian Forest Days 2026 took place at Tērvete Nature Park on May 22 and 23. The theme of this year was "Capture carbon in trees and grow oxygen", inviting the public to appreciate the importance of forests in mitigating climate change and creating a sustainable environment.
The event brought together visitors from all over Latvia, who explored the diversity of the forest sector at more than 100 educational stations — from the fundamentals of forestry to innovations in science and sustainable forest management.
At the educational station of LSFRI 'Silava', visitors, guided by Dagnija Lazdiņa, Toms Artūrs Štāls, Liene Zēberga and Liene Sūniņa-Biedre, had the opportunity to learn about the diversity of forest ecosystems, the importance of soil and water for forest development, as well as forest biodiversity and the role of coastal forests in environmental protection.
During the event, on May 23, Senior researcher Dagnija Lazdiņa also took part in a live broadcast of Radio SWH, where she introduced listeners to the importance of soil in the development of forest stands and the unexpected discoveries researchers encounter in the course of their studies.
LSFRI 'Silava' would like to thank the event organizers and all visitors for their great interest, active participation, and enthusiasm for discovering the science behind forests!
More about our research projects, the latest results of which were presented at the event:
- Implementation of river basin management plans of Latvia towards good surface water status (LIFE GoodWater IP)
- Linking soil biodiversity and ecosystem functions and services in different land uses: from the identification of drivers, pressures and climate change resilience to their economic valuation (BIOservicES)
- Monetary valuation of soil ecosystem services and creation of initiatives to invest in soil health: setting a framework for the inclusion of soil health in business and in the policy making (InBestSoil)
