Latvian State Forest Research Institute "Silava" will host the international online seminar Forest Genetic Monitoring in the Baltic Sea Region: Guidelines, Management Scenarios, and Pilot Insights, dedicated to forest genetic diversity monitoring and its practical application in sustainable forest management on September 11, 2026.
The seminar is organised within the framework of the international research project Early Forecasting and Monitoring System for Genetic Biodiversity Loss in Keystone Forest Tree Species (DIVERSE_GENE_WATCH). Its aim is to share the latest knowledge and practical approaches to forest genetic monitoring, while promoting the integration of genetic diversity into forest management planning. Conserving genetic diversity is essential for strengthening the long-term adaptability and resilience of forests under changing climatic and environmental conditions.
During the seminar, partners of the DIVERSE_GENE_WATCH project will present the project's progress, the forest genetic monitoring guidelines developed for the Baltic Sea Region, and experiences gained from implementing pilot activities across the region. One of the four presentations will be delivered by Dainis Ruņģis, senior researcher at LSFRI "Silava", who will present "Piloting forest genetic monitoring in the Baltic sea region countries".
The seminar is intended for professionals and stakeholders working in the fields of forest genetic resources, forest monitoring, biodiversity conservation, forest management, research, and policy development.
The event will take place online on September 11, 2026, from 09:00 to 10:20 (CET).
