The GMO Scientific Expert Commission represents a broad range of Latvian scientific institutions, including the Latvian State Forest Research Institute "Silava", ensuring forestry expertise in GMO-related matters. Other members are the representatives of Scientific Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment "BIOR", Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre, Riga East University Hospital, Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis, Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, the Institute of Horticulture, the Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences of the University of Latvia, and Riga Technical University.
Following the first meeting, held at the "BIOR" Institute, the members of Commission visited laboratories where routine analyses are conducted to detect the presence of GMOs.
The work of GMO Scientific Expert Commission is essential to ensure that decisions regarding the circulation of genetically modified organisms in Latvia are scientifically grounded, independent, and transparent. The Commission evaluates the potential risks to human health and the environment while maintaining a balance between biosafety, scientific development, and public interest. The participation of LSFRI "Silava" strengthens the assessment of forest environment and ecosystem sustainability aspects in GMO risk evaluations.
