Gifu Prefecture is homeplace of the Gifu Academy of Forest Science and Culture – a unique prefectural educational institution that prepares professionals with specialized knowledge and practical skills in forestry and the wood sector. It is the only institution of its kind in Japan where students acquire an integrated approach, ranging from forest management to wood processing and its use in everyday life.

During the visit, the delegation learned about the work of "Silava", it's main research directions, and current initiatives. The meeting also addressed potential cooperation opportunities with the Gifu Academy of Forest Science and Culture and other forest-related organizations in the prefecture. Following the discussions, the guests toured the Institute's laboratories. The visitors particularly praised "Silava's" achievements in public communication, noting that their own country still has a long way to go in this regard.

More than 80% of the territory of Gifu Prefecture is covered by forests, including mountainous areas.

The delegation of Gifu Prefecture included Nobuyo Yamashita, the Deputy Director of the Department of Tourism, Culture and Sports, and Hiroki Sakai and Eri Seto, Heads of the International Exchange Division of the same department.

The visit was organized by the Embassy of Japan in Latvia.
