The Latvian State Forest Research Institute "Silava" has received an overall score "4" (very good) in an international expert evaluation, confirming its significant role as a strong international player in forestry science. The experts particularly highlighted the high quality of "Silava's" research, the growing number of publications in international scientific journals, and active cooperation with research institutions across Europe and beyond.
The research of LSFRI "Silava" is primarily focused on applied solutions that provide direct benefits to the forestry sector, society, and the national economy as a whole. The Institute's economic impact was assessed as excellent, receiving the highest possible score (5), with emphasis on its role in fostering innovation, strengthening the bioeconomy, and collaborating with industry. The developed solutions contribute to forest productivity, climate change mitigation, and sustainable resource management, while also supporting public outreach, education, and the conservation of natural values.
At the same time, experts point to significant development potential — particularly in strengthening interdisciplinary and fundamental research, expanding international cooperation, and developing modern research infrastructure. It is emphasized that, by continuing targeted development and leveraging its extensive long-term datasets, "Silava" could become a leading forestry research centre in the Baltic Sea region and an important hub of forestry expertise in Northern Europe.
