Latvian State Forest Research Institute "Silava" organised the Latvian Forest Science Day "Stories about the Latvian National Forest Inventory" at the Centre of Forest Research Station "Mežmāja" and its surroundings on May 16. More than 120 participants took part in this event.
Latvian Forest Science Day is the tradition of forest research communication since 2012, gathering together Latvian forest scientists, practitioners of forest sector, policy makers, students and others.
The seminar topic this time was chosen in the context of the Latvian National Forest Inventory (NFI), which has completed 5-year cycle and started next 5-year cycle.
Monitoring information reveals what Latvia's forests are today – timber resources, productivity and health, and gives also sight into the future, allowing to model what they will be after 50 or even 100 years.
Scientists presented the following topics:
- Jurģis Jansons: Current information about 4th cycle of forest resources inventory
- Guntars Šņepsts: Forest Resources Inventory or Statistical Forest Inventory – Results of 4th cycle
- Jānis Ivanovs: Progress in remote sensing for forest wood resources assessment at forest estate level
- Uldis Zvirbulis: I level forest healt monitoring
