An international conference "Life-Long Learning for Sustainable Forestry" took place in Pärnu (Estonia) and Salaspils (Latvia) during from June 15 to 16. Scientists from Sweden, Estonia, Ukraine and Latvia shared their knowledge and experience on lifelong learning opportunities in the forestry sector in the Conference. The conference also included discussions on future challenges that forest owners and sector professionals are likely to face.

The event was organized by the Latvian State Forest Research Institute "Silava" in cooperation with Linnaeus University (Sweden), Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, the Latvian Forest Owners' Association, the Estonian Private Forest Union, the Estonian University of Life Sciences, and the Kyiv School of Economics (Ukraine).

On June 15, Conference participants took part in an excursion that began in Estonia – at a forestry equipment manufacturing facility – and continued in Latvia, with visits to coastal forest areas and other forest management demonstration sites. The aim was to introduce participants to the implementation process of the LIFE GoodWater IP project – aimed at achieving good status of surface waters through river basin management plans in Latvia.

On June 16, oral presentation sessions were held at LSFRI "Silava". The sessions covered a wide range of forestry education topics – from training courses (including e-learning formats) to vocational and academic studies. Participants also discussed the competencies required in the future and how today’s education systems can meet those needs, based on the latest research and best practice examples.

The Conference sessions were chaired by scientists of LSFRI "Silava":
