The research is supported by the ERA-NET FACCE ERA-GAS programm, receiving funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and development program under contract No. 696356
The aim of the project is to improve national GHG inventory systems in the participating countries using National forest inventory data and auxiliary data source, as well as to create preconditions for implementation of the project results in other European countries using unified modelling and data validation tools.
Research areas:
- Reducing the uncertainty of NFI plot-based changes in forest biomass (harvest on forest land) and afforestation and deforestation (area and harvest due to land use transition) by utilizing auxiliary data in a model-assisted framework.
- Mapping the estimates of forest soil C changes and their uncertainties at the relevant spatial scale and suggesting cost-efficient validation approaches.
- Evaluate the potential impact of modified estimates and uncertainties for area estimation, biomass and soil carbon on the national GHG inventories and outline the integration of new methodologies into existing national systems ensuring consistency with the national time series.
Expected results:
- A catalogue of auxiliary data relevant for living biomass and soil carbon estimation.
- Implementation of improved estimators for carbon stock changes in living biomass.
- Improved maps of soil type and soil carbon stocks in forest.
- Improved spatial information on drivers of forest soil C changes, soil type specific estimates and model-based uncertainties.
- Impact assessment of results for national GHG inventories by comparing current and improved carbon change estimates.
- Recommendations on how new methodology can be integrated into national reporting routines including their costs.
