On Wednesday, August 26, an open session of the Doctoral Council for Forest Sciences was held at the Latvian State Forest Research Institute 'Silava'. During the session, the Research assistant of LSFRI 'Silava' Valters Samariks defended his doctoral thesis Carbon stock changes after long-term drainage in forests on organic soils, in pursuit of a doctoral degree in forest sciences.

The Ph.D. Thesis was developed in the Latvian State Forest Research Institute 'Silava' through research conducted within the following projects:
- Development of a decision support tool integrating information from old-growth semi-natural forest for more comprehensive estimates of carbon balance,
- Tool for assessment of carbon turnover and greenhouse gas fluxes in broadleaved tree stands with consideration of internal stem decay, and
- LBTU doctoral student support and development initiative.
