Rural Support Service of the Ministry of Agriculture of Latvia agreement No. 25-00-S0INZ03-000027

The study is financed in accordance with Cabinet of Ministers regulations No. 59 "Procedure for awarding state and European Union support for investment promotion in agriculture".

The aim of the study is to quantitatively and socio-economically assess the impact of climate change mitigation measures implemented and planned in the Latvian LFS sector on reducing GHG emissions and increasing CO2 sequestration in forest management, as well as their contribution to achieving climate neutrality goals. The study will survey Level 1 forest health monitoring plots and determine the carbon and nitrogen content and stock in soil, improve the methodology for calculating organic soil emissions for forest lands, prepare a knowledge review on the impact of renaturalization and afforestation on GHG emissions, and improve the growth trajectory model (AGM) equations and biomass growth models using ALS and Sentinel-2 data. The results obtained will be integrated into scenario and forecast recalculations for LFS measures, including the substitution effect in the energy and agricultural sectors. The main results will be updated equations and parameterizations for soil carbon cycling and biomass dynamics, validated modeling tools for assessing the impact of activities, a set of scenarios for the LULCF sector, and a scientific publication that will provide a scientifically sound basis for national GHG inventory and policy planning.
