Start date: 19.07.2007
End date: 18.06.2011

Planned activities:

  1. Collect and analyse the latest available information in literature and databases to further select possible in situ areas for conservation of wild relatives of crops (CWR);
  2. To survey three potential in situ CWR conservation areas earlier in the season, while the species are still flowering and easier to identify, identify coordinates so they can be re-surveyed in the future, as well as collect seed samples;
  3. When surveying areas where the presence of rare and protected species is noted, analyse the occurrence of CWR priority species in order to assess the possibility of using rare and protected species as 'indicator species' for other species in the priority list.

Planned deliverables:

  1. Refinement of the selection methods of the priority areas to be surveyed;
  2. Survey of priority areas, estimating the approximate population size and assessing the incidence of different species and the suitability of the site for in situ conservation;
  3. Appraisal of the possibility to use protected species as indicator species for the presence of priority CWR species;
  4. Presentation of the obtained results at a scientific conference.
