Researcher of Latvian State Forest Research Institute 'Silava' Laura Ķēniņa participated in the 12th International Symposium Forest & Sustainable Development, held in Brașov (Romania) from October 15 to 16. The Conference brought together scientists from various countries to share the latest findings in forest science and promote international cooperation.
The programme covered current issues in forest ecosystem management, forest economics, policy and remote sensing. During excursions to the Doftana Valley and the Sânpetru Teaching and Research Station, participants learned about research in forest tree breeding, tree growing conditions and seed orchard establishment.
Laura Ķēniņa presented two contributions based on her postdoctoral research project Assessment of structural dynamics and biodiversity composition of hemiboreal old-growth forests to advance closer-to-nature management. The research draws on data from old-growth forests in Latvia and Romania:
- Do hemiboreal Norway spruce old-growth forest stands show similar old-growth characteristics to Carpathian old-growth forests?
- Height-diameter relationship in old-growth spruce forest in Romania.
Participation in the Conference and research mobility supported the development of the postdoctoral project, increased the international visibility of Latvian forest science, and strengthened scientific cooperation.
