As part of the Latvian State Forest Research Institute 'Silava' project Development of research and innovation capacity at LSFRI 'Silava' (2025–2029), the equipment used in forest tree breeding and woody plant adaptation research will be modernised to strengthen research capacity and obtain higher-quality data on tree growth, health and resilience to natural disturbances.
Research capabilities will be enhanced with tree movement and wind load sensors, equipment for static pulling tests, electrical resistance tomography and wood sample analysis instruments. Drones equipped with multispectral and thermal cameras will enable more effective assessment of forest ecosystem conditions and tree responses to environmental changes.
Bioacoustic recording devices will be used to study biodiversity, enabling long-term recording of bird vocalisations and complementing traditional observation methods with automated data collection.
The new equipment will enable researchers to combine field studies with advanced sensor technologies, remote sensing and digital methods, improving research quality and contributing to the development of forest science in Latvia.

The project "Development of research and innovation capacity at LSFRI 'Silava' (2025–2029)" (agreement No. 1.1.1.2/1/25/I/011) is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and implemented in cooperation with the Central Finance and Contracting Agency (CFCA). The Project aims to strengthen the research and innovation capacity of LSFRI 'Silava' by modernising its research infrastructure and introducing advanced technologies.
