Project Research and innovation based solutions to support the peat sector's transition to a climate neutral economy, promoting the sustainable use of Latvia's natural resources (PeatTransform) brings together seven partners to develop science-based solutions for sustainable peatland management, greenhouse gas (GHG) emission assessment, peat substitutes, and the future use of post-extraction sites.
Researchers are monitoring CO2, CH4 and N2O emissions at different peatland sites. A comparison of gas analysers at the Pindstrup peat extraction site showed differences of no more than 8%, supporting the development of reliable measurement methods. Satellite, drone and laser-scanning data are also being used to improve peatland mapping and emissions assessment.
The Project is exploring new uses for former peat extraction areas, including paludiculture and agrivoltaics, which combines agricultural production with solar energy. Trials with cranberries, blueberries and cloudberries are assessing how solar panels affect crop growth and yield.
Another key focus is reducing peat use in growing media. Trials at the Institute of Horticulture achieved strawberry yields of up to 429 g per plant in modified peat mixtures, compared with 426 g in the commercial control. Researchers are also testing biochar made from used growing media and developing methods to extract humic and fulvic acids.
Project findings have been presented at international scientific events and industry seminars. The PeatTransform also engages young people through the Eco-Schools idea sprint "Create an idea for the future of Peatlands!", won by a team from Šķibe Basic School.
So far, eight scientific publications have been published, including two in Q1-quartile journals, and two further papers are under peer review. Eight peat industry companies have signed cooperation agreements with the project. Research information is available at www.kudrajupetijumi.lv.
The next phase will focus on continued GHG monitoring, demonstration sites, further development of peat substitutes and other practical solutions, and the preparation of 50 scientific publications.
PeatTransform is implemented under the European Union Cohesion Policy Programme for 2021–2027 (agreement No. 6.1.1.2/1/25/A/001), supporting research for the sustainable use of natural resources in the context of environmental and climate objectives.
