On September 14, the 7th episode of the podcast "Soil talks", entitled Sustainable forestry in Latvia, was released as part of the project Monetary valuation of soil ecosystem services and creation of initiatives to invest in soil health: setting a framework for the inclusion of soil health in business and in the policy making (InBestSoil). The episode focuses on the importance of forest soil health in building resilient forests under changing climate conditions.
In the discussion, Dagnija Lazdiņa and Arta Bārdule, Senior researchers of LSFRI 'Silava', explore the main challenges facing Latvia's forest soils, including nutrient losses after logging, soil erosion, changes in carbon stocks, and the effects of extreme weather events.
The podcast also examines practical solutions for improving soil health, such as the use of wood ash, forest thinning, the establishment of mixed-species stands, and the restoration of degraded areas using organic materials. The importance of forest soils in carbon sequestration and reducing greenhouse gas emissions is also highlighted.
